Changing the Channel: Getting to Know Lick Creek
Once a naturally meandering waterway, Lick Creek is now a channelized part of our modern urban storm drain system. However, its history as a floodplain remains visible in the Old Forest.
Join us for this month’s Third Thursday Trek through portions of the creek and Overton Park to explore how a single creek connects to larger watershed systems, how human engineering has altered local forest ecosystems, and what this means for the future of our forest. We'll examine historical photographs, maps, and on-site observations to trace the creek's transformation from natural waterway to urban conduit.
Come curious and ready to drop down into the creek!
This program will be held on natural surface trails, limestone trails, and pavement surfaces. We will be dropping down into the creek for a short portion of this walk, requiring a drop and climb of about 4ft.
This event is pay-what-you-can, with a suggested contribution of $5 per person.
